VIEW OUR DIRECTORY Does USA Swimming Safe Sport Staff tell a reporter if they report to the U.S. Center for SafeSport?

Yes. USA Swimming Safe Sport Staff will promptly inform the reporting party when USA Swimming or the U.S. Center for SafeSport will be addressing their concern. USA Swimming Safe Sport Staff will also inform the reporting party if the concern should be addressed by the LSC, Club, or will not be pursued further.

How does USA Swimming handle reports that are made to them?

There are many possible avenues and associated steps to address a concern that is reported to USA Swimming. Each avenue is addressed in stages with goals and steps. We make it a priority to handle our cases consistently and ethically. Throughout the different avenues there are many different communications that we make with those that are involved in the matter.

Does USA Swimming have any say in the U.S. Center for SafeSport’s process of a report?

No. USA Swimming shall not interfere in, attempt to interfere in, or attempt to influence the outcome of any Center investigation.

Will USA Swimming ever give information to the U.S. Center for SafeSport about a report?

Yes. Upon request, USA Swimming will provide historical information about reports to the Center. USA Swimming will also provide information about the types of reports that are made and addressed by USA Swimming including physical and emotional misconduct, as well as reports concerning MAAPP violations and retaliation.

What is the difference between USA Swimming Safe Sport and the U.S. Center for SafeSport?

The U.S. Center for SafeSport (The Center) is a separate non-profit organization that has exclusive jurisdiction over all sexual misconduct complaints in the Olympic and Paralympic movement.

When was the USA Swimming Safe Sport program created?

In 2010, USA Swimming took the initiative to create the Safe Sport program to demonstrate the importance of having dedicated staff, response and prevention efforts to create an abuse free sporting environment.

How can I find out who has been banned or suspended from membership in USA Swimming?
Is my team Safe Sport Recognized?

The Safe Sport Club Recognition program allows a member club to demonstrate its commitment to creating a healthy and positive environment free from abuse for all of its members through the development and implementation of club governance measures, Safe Sport policies and reporting mechanisms, Safe Sport best practices and training to athletes and parents.

Safe Sport Recognized Clubs earn a badge to display on their website, and these clubs will be designated as Safe Sport Recognized in USA Swimming’s Find-a-Team online search tool.

Check with your club leadership on their Safe Sport Recognized program status.

How are coaches and volunteers screened?

All adult athlete and non-athlete members are required to complete a USA Swimming-approved criminal background check. All USA Swimming member clubs are required to complete additional pre-employment screening of its employees. Ask your club how employees are screened and hired. All coaches and volunteers must be educated in USA Swimming policies and club policies including Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policies, Anti-bullying policy, and best practice guidelines.

What is the Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policy (MAAPP)?

The MAAPP is a collection of proactive prevention and training policies for the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Movement. It has three primary components: an Education and Training Policy, Required Prevention Policies, and Recommended Prevention Policies. The Center developed the MAAPP to assist National Governing Bodies, Paralympic Sport Organizations, Local Affiliated Organizations, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, and other individuals to whom these policies apply in meeting their obligations under federal law.
